ADVANCE: GLOBAL AUSTRALIANS OPENS ROVING EYE 2007/08
New York Exhibition Showcases Seven Australian Artists
Working Beyond Australias Borders
Robert Steele Gallery NYC
December 17, 2007 [New York, NY] -- Advance: Global Australians, a global community for Australians living and working overseas, opened its fourth annual Roving Eye exhibition at the Robert Steele Gallery on Thursday, December 13. The exhibition will run until January 12, 2008. The Robert Steele Gallery, located at 511 West 25th Street, New York, is open from Tuesday to Saturday between 11am and 6pm or by appointment.
The seven artists featured in this years Roving Eye Katherine Blackburne, Theresa Byrnes, Annie Hogan, Howard Jones, Kate Murphy, Timothy Paul Myers and Lisa Solomons have only their Australian nationality and a desire in common.
Art made in Australia has been predicated on issues of place and identity since its European beginnings, while Australias physical distance from Europe is understood to be a crucial shaper of the countrys history and culture, writes Ingrid Perez, art critic, in the Roving Eye 2007/08 catalogue. Dont look for Australian-ness here, but at the same time, dont be surprised if you think you see it.
Katherine Blackburne paints intimate, yet slightly off-kilter scenes based on her own discarded family photos. Theresa Byrnes produces colourful ink washes on paper that ostensibly investigate abstractions in nature but still manage a curious political bite. Annie Hogans still life photographs of prison interiors examine issues of constraint and, in the end, our social and personal prisons. By contrast, Howard Joness photographs printed on large birch panels present interior life in Ethiopia and shows how life in the West pales in essential ways. Kate Murphys video work goes further to examine the self-reflection of our idol culture. Timothy Paul Myers constructs installations looking at the dual nature of ritual and repetition, which while integral to learning can lead to darker aspects of hoarding and obsession. And Lisa Solomons creates soft sculptures that lead simultaneously to spirituality, interior secrets and the magic within.
In 2008, Advance will extend Roving Eye exhibition to London, U.K for the very first time, to showcase a group of Australian artists working in the U.K. The London Roving Eye will open at the Rebecca Hossack gallery at 2a Conway Street, Fitzrovia, London on Tuesday March 4, 2008.
